The World's First Foosball Table?

Anyone for Foosball?

Is this a picture of the world’s first foosball table?

Sadly, the answer is No.

What you are looking at is the interlocking apparatus for operating switches and signals by compressed air at the Pennsylvania Railroads’ Pittsburg Yards facility, from the late 1880s. A model of the track is shown above the levers, on which the movements of the switches and signals are electrically indicated after they are completed.

Mind you, I do like the idea of a giant Foosball game that uses compressed air to move a ball around. Now that is a game that would be fun to play!

The image comes the book The American Railway, which is available as a free download from Gutenberg.Org.

  1. I'm moving back to Chicago in a week and when I do I think I'll get one of this types of tables to become better on those because I've just become really good on the Sportcraft we have in our office, but that is such a specific kind of play due to the things.
