Ground Zero Cam

Last Saturday, (The Week That Was #10) I noted that the new World Trade Center subway complex was now becoming visible above ground on the site of the former Twin Towers. It occurred to me there was probably a web cam above the site somewhere filming the whole construction site, so I went looking for it.

Sure enough, the New York Ground Zero web cam provides 24 hour coverage of the site, allowing you to follow the rebuilding process from the comfort of your own home, no matter where you might be living around the world. The images from the camera’s (there are two of them) update every five seconds, and you also have the ability to zoom in on the site for a close view, or move the camera’s up and down, and left to right.

While you are at the Ground Zero page of the Earth Cam site, make sure you take the time to look through the archives available via the links there. The stunning photograph illustrating this post, was taken on August 24, 2009, from the top of the Millennium Hilton Hotel which overlooks the site, and is one of several showing panoramic views of the World Financial Center complex, and the work currently underway.

Clearly, there is still a lot to be done, but I have no doubt the thousands of construction workers involved with the rebuilding work will see the job through.

By now, millions of visitors must have walked around the site since September 11, 2001. It is truly a humbling experience to see with your own eyes, the massive space the former World Trade Center towers occupied in downtown New York City. I hope to visit the site again on my return to New York in 2010. In the meantime, utilising the services of Earth Cam I will follow, and watch with interest, the building process from my home here in Adelaide.
